Muto gets Asian Cup call

Yoshinori Muto has been called up to the Japan squad for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019.

The Newcastle forward was not named in Hajime Moriyasu’s initial 23-man squad, but has now been called up for the tournament, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates from 5th January to 1st February 2019.

He will join up with his international colleagues after the Magpies’ home game against Manchester United on Wednesday, 2nd January and could miss four league games as well as the Emirates FA Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers.

The 26-year-old – who joined Newcastle from Mainz 05 in the summer after playing in the 2018 World Cup finals for his country – has scored once in 11 appearances (five starts) so far for Rafa Benítez’s side.

Japan have won the Asian Cup a record four times. Muto’s Magpies team-mate Ki Sung-yueng will represent South Korea in the competition. He was captain of the squad which finished as runners up to Australia in 2015.

Tickets on sale for Sunderland Checkatrade tie

Tickets for Newcastle United’s under-21s’ Checkatrade Trophy last 16 tie at Sunderland are now on sale to season ticket holders with 30 or more away points.

The young Magpies face Jack Ross’ League One side at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday, 8th January (kick-off 7.45pm), with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs.

Tickets for the local derby clash are priced at £15 for adults and £5 for concessions. United have been given an allocation of 2,800 for the tie.

Coach travel

The club will be running return coach travel for supporters who have secured tickets through the club. Buses will depart from Barrack Road at 5.30pm on Tuesday, 8th January, and a £7 charge will apply.

Rondón wins player of the month prize

Salomón Rondón is the FUN88 player of the month for November.

The Venezuelan forward scored twice in the win over AFC Bournemouth and has since netted twice more to give him four goals in his last six matches.

Supporters were given the chance to vote for their player of the month and Rondón gained 62 per cent of the vote. Federico Fernández came second with 24 per cent of the vote, while Ki Sung-yueng picked up 14 per cent.
