Newcastle United have some promising young players to get excited about.

With transfer spending seemingly down across the board right now, perhaps Newcastle United would be wise to promote from within.

While Newcastle believe they can spend this summer, trusting some of the players in the Newcastle United academy has worked wonders for Eddie Howe before.

Indeed, Howe wants to build his team around Lewis Miley in the future, having seen him adjust to life in the first-team rather quickly last season.

The likes of Leo Shahar and Sean Neave look promising, along with players such as Garang Kuol and Alfie Harrison

Defender Shahar has been impressing Newcastle coaches in training, while forward Neave was included in the squad who won the Carabao Cup final

They were, however, dealt a blow on Friday night.

Newcastle United U-21s suffer heartbreak

The Newcastle United U-21s finished ninth in the Premier League 2 standings, ensuring they were part of the play-offs contested at the end of the initial campaign.

Manager Diarmuid O’Carroll made four changes to the team who lost to Manchester City last week but saw his side fall at the round-of-16 stage away at Arsenal.

The likes of Kuol, Shahar and Neave played a full 90 minutes but there was no place for Harrison.

Nathan Butler-Oyedeji’s penalty put the young Gunners into the lead before Newcastle’s Scott Bailey’s brilliant lob got them back on level terms just after the break.

There would be late heartbreak at Meadow Park, however, when Khayon Edwards struck a stoppage-time penalty to claim a dramatic win for Arsenal.

Newcastle’s young players offered another chance of glory

Harrison has been racking up the assists for the Newcastle U21s this season with seven in 22 outings, so it was perhaps a surprise not to see him in action at all on Friday.

Kuol has also been impressing in Newcastle’s youth ranks, having bagged five in 12 games this season.

Still, O’Carroll’s side do have another shot at some kind of glory.

Having finished in the top 12 of the Premier League 2 this season, they will be invited to take part in next season’s Premier League International Cup competition.

That sees invited international clubs also compete in a season-long competition to run alongside the domestic duties that each club must fulfill.
